As a makeup artist, I understand how you could feel utterly overwhelmed walking through a makeup aisle. The sheer choice alone sends me into a spin. Add the bright lights and a horde of people, well, why wouldn’t you buy the first one advised, or simply give up! ‘Which Foundation should I buy?’ Is THE most popular question I get asked. After all, we all want glowing, flawless, natural looking skin.

There are a couple of things to think about before choosing your foundation. What skin tone (undertone) do you have? You will be yellow, olive, red or grey. A quick tip to help you understand you skin tone: If you like wearing gold, then you are yellow or olive (yellow based foundation). If you like wearing silver, then you are red (pink based foundation) or grey (grey based foundation). Now decide which coverage you would like: sheer, medium, or full. You still want to look fresh faced, even if you need extra blemish coverage in certain areas.

When it comes to shopping for your foundation. The jaw line is the perfect place to test your foundations. Always match the colour to your face, even if its paler than the rest of you. You can add colour later with a bronzing cream or powder. Always go outside in natural daylight to check the colour. I would recommend you buy two colours. One for your paler winter skin, and one for your summer sun-kissed skin. Don’t be afraid to mix them when you are any shade in between these seasons. Finally make sure your foundation sits with your skin, not on your skin. It’s about perfecting and beautifying what you already have.

Here on The Grown Up Edit I want to share the foundations I most highly recommend and the ones in my professional makeup kit. These will give you perfect looking skin, everyday!
